Her Career and Theories Stetter Hollingworth began her career as a teacher and assistant principal in Nebraska high schools.  She soon moved to New York to be with her husband as he completed his doctoral studies. While she had originally planned to continue teaching, New York did not allow married women to teach school at that time. Frustrated and bored, she soon enrolled at Columbia University and went on to earn a Masters in Education in 1913. She took a position at the Clearing House for Mental Defectives where she administered and scored Binet intelligence tests. She went on to continue her psychology studies under the guidance of famed psychologist Edward L. Thorndike. She completed her Ph.D. in 1916 and took a job at Columbias Teachers College, where she remained for the rest of her career. Research on the Psychology of Women Hollingworths earliest research interests centered on the psychology of women. One of her early experiments challenged the notion that men were intellectually superior to women. She looked at data for 1,000 males and 1,000 females and found that there was no difference in giftedness between the male and female participants. In further research on the psychology of women, Hollingworth challenged the notion at the time that women were essentially semi-invalid while menstruating. This belief had a major impact on womens rights since many employers refused to hire women because they believed they would be incapable of performing their duties for about one week each month. Over a three-month period, she tested 23 women and two men on a variety of tasks that tested mental abilities and motor skills. She found that there were no performance differences at any point in a womans menstrual cycle. Research With Gifted Children Hollingworth is also famous for her work with gifted children. As part of her work administering intelligence tests, she became interested in the psychology of giftedness. She believed that educational services often neglected these students because educators and parents believed that these gifted could simply take care of themselves. Instead, Hollingworth suggested that it was important to create a curriculum designed to foster the specific needs of gifted children. Hollingworth also wrote the first comprehensive book about gifted children as well as taught the very first college course on giftedness. Hollingsworths studies of gifted children coincided with Lewis Termans famous study of highly intelligent people. The two thinkers never actually met, but purportedly held each others work in high esteem. One of the major differences between their approaches was that while Terman believed that intelligence was largely genetic, Hollingworth was more concerned with the environmental and educational factors that contributed to intelligence. By building more different models people had the option to choose what type of car they wanted to get. It also allowed an average American to decide whether to purchase a stylish car that less expensive, or a appealing car that was more class; however, with various models, even a simple car was made affordable by an average household. Overall, cars helped the workers and the Americans because it reduced the work they had to put into carrying parts to and from work and it allowed any people to live freely rather than living in an area where communication to work was accessible. Another way Henry Ford expanded the economy was by stimulating industries related to the automobile empire. For example, â€Å"oil and steel were two well- established industries that received a serious boost by the demand for automobiles† (Age of the Automobile). Many industries like the oil and steel were increasing production for more automobiles being produced. During this automobile era, â€Å"manufacturing became a highly mechanized process in which mass manufacturing was performed by unskilled workers and the assembly line cut down on human handling, and machines were designed to handle multiple tasks†(Bianca). In other words, quick development was a very important skill that unskilled workers had to master; however, this was made easy because a lot of the times machines did most of the work and the workers would have to put a little effort to make sure everything was right. This enabled Ford â€Å"to increase production from about 475 cars in a nine-hour day to more than 1,200 auto assemblies in an eight-hour day’ (Bianca). Due to more manufacturing of cars and more products of steel, rubber, and glass being created, Ford increased the production of the assembly lines. Having raw materials such as rubber and steel available in the market, â€Å"more people would buy raw materials and products, which stimulated public spending throughout. † This gave Ford a chance to another company called â€Å"The Ford Manufacturing Company, which was started to produce engines, running gears and other car parts† (Tilting, 41). Ford realized that in order for the cars to be perfect, he needed another company to aka all his cars stronger, so different industries with different productions parts were created to increase the production of automobiles even more. Although Ford’s ultimate goal was to increase the production of automobile, he also focused on the efficiency of the automobiles. His major concern regarding the efficiency was â€Å"mainly towards the strength and reliability, knowing that the metal he was using for certain parts, such as the gears, was too brittle, so he looked out for a stronger kind of steel† (45). Ford knew that if his gears or any other car part broke, the car would be selves, so he wanted to guarantee that his car would be stronger and more efficient than anything else on the market. Thus, Ford not only expanded the production of automobiles, but also other industries that played a major role in producing an automobile. Consequently, Henry Ford has played a huge leadership role because he made Americans lives better. He used many techniques that improved the economy. He did most of this by expanding his company so cars were available to Americans, and by stimulating public spending through many industries. According to estimates by the American Wind Energy Association, the potential of producing wind power in the US is about 10.8 trillion kWh annually, which is equal to the energy produced by 20 billion barrels of oil that is the present annual oil supply globally (Layton 3). Wind power provides about 3.23% of the total electricity in the US (Eia.gov). The current wind power capacity of the US is more than 20% of that of the total wind power produced throughout the world. In six states of the US, more than 10% of the total electricity is wind powered, with two of the states having 20% of their electricity requirements being fulfilled by wind energy alone (DOE/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory). The use of valid selection methods is an important prerequisite for good selection decision making .This review is focused on interviews effectiveness as one of the selection method. From the point of view of organisation interview decides the future employee where a lots of responsibilities lies for the organisation to select the right candidate. However interview is one way of several ways to recruit human resources and its validity and reliability needs to be accurate. Chapter gives a description of introduction of the topic, literature review and methodology to carry out the research. It set up two objectives that are to identify the strengths and weaknesses of interview technique and to find out the recommendation and suggestion to remove the flaws of interview. Most selection devices including interview are made on the basis of predictions about how well an applicant will perform, the usefulness of these predictions is determined by two main factors their reliability and validity (Sparrow, 1994 ). These are the fundamental requirements for any selection method. Suggested by Travor (1999) The structure, validity, reliability and predictive power of structure and unstructured interview have been analysed, investigated through the researchers` comments, suggestions and theory of personality. Finally step-by-step details on how both of the interview methods differ in predicting accurate job performance is presented by personality theory, job analysis etc. A key findings of this analysis in the chapter 4 is that unstructured interview is less valid and reliable as it does not focus on the behavioural based analysis to predict the job performance where structured interview is more valid and accurate as it is based on scientific and theoretical analysis using job analysis, scoring guide, and predictive questions. Through the analysis in this report, suggestion and recommendation has been made to make the interview more effective and eliminate the interview errors. A Harvard University study reports that 80% of turnover can be blamed on mistakes made during the employee selection and hiring process. Employee selection process is very important for every Organisation. If an organisation makes the wrong selection decision it will employ an individual who is not going to meet the organisations expectations of an entrant at the level. Selection and assessment is fundamentally concerned with the prediction of job performance and prediction necessarily implies the existence of predictors. There are several types of selection methods or predictors. There are more combinations and ways for selection system. Interview is a two way process -with the candidate assessing the organisation as well as the other way around. For years occupational psychologists have argued that interviews are among the worst methods of selection that organisations can use to choose its employees. Dipboye (1994) has suggested that the interview has no unique content: it is simply a method of collecting information .Nevertheless , in order to research to proceed there is a generic definition for interview as : The employment interview is defined as an interviewer-applicant exchange of information in which the interviewer(s) into the applicants (a) work-related knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs); ( motivations; (c) values; and (d) reliability, with the overall staffing goals of attracting, selecting and retaining a highly competent and productive workforce. Positivist studies generally attempt to test theory, in an attempt to increase the predictive understanding of phenomena (Orlikowski Baroudi, 1991). 2.2.1 The Positivist Paradigm: Theories, Propositions, Hypotheses and Hypothesis Testing A paradigm is a set of beliefs about the nature of social reality, that is, the nature of the world and the individuals place in it (Guba and Lincoln 1994). Guba and Lincoln note that a paradigm has three dimensions:  · What is the form and nature of reality (the ontological question)?  · What is the relationship between the researcher and what can be known (the epistemological question)?  · How does the researcher find out whatever they believe can be known (the methodological question)? It is critical to remember that paradigms are assumptions that are not subject to proof. They are human constructions that are neither right nor wrong: proponents must argue for their utility (Guba and Lincoln 1994). The positivist paradigm has the following positions with regard to the three dimensions: 1. An objective reality is assumed which can be systematically and rationally investigated through empirical investigation, and is driven by general causal laws that apply to social behaviour. This is sometimes called naÃÆ' ¯ve realism (the ontological position) (Guba and Lincoln 1994). 2. The researcher and the phenomena being investigated are assumed to be independent, and the researcher remains detached, neutral and objective. Any reduction in independence is a threat to the validity of the study, and should be reduced by following prescribed procedures (the epistemological position) (Shanks Parr, n.d). 3. General theories are used to generate propositions that are operationalised as hypotheses and subjected to empirical testing that is replicable. Hypotheses should be testable and provide the opportunity for confirmation and falsification. This is the essence of the scientific method (the methodological position) (Shanks Parr, n.d). In the following discussion about theory, proposition, hypothesis and hypothesis testing we assume a positivist position. 2.2.1Theories A theory is a system of ideas that abstracts and organises knowledge about the social world (Neuman 2000). There are many types of theory including implicit (preconceptions, biases and values etc.) and explicit theory (sets of organised concepts and their interrelationships) (Miles and Huberman 1994). There are highly abstract theoretical frameworks, and focused mid-range theories more suited to empirical work (Neuman 2000). For empirical studies conducted using a positivist, deductive case approach mid-range, explicit theories are relevant. Dubin (1978) notes that this type of theory has three main elements:  · A set of well-defined concepts (or units);  · Laws of interaction (or interrelationships between the units);  · A boundary within which the theory holds. 2.2.2 Propositions Predictions about the world are made using propositions, that is, conclusions that may be deduced logically from the theory. Propositions link the values of units. Propositions in the viewpoint development theoretical framework will therefore link specific values of viewpoint representation with specific values of viewpoint development role. Dubin (1978) notes that the most usual form of propositions is the if à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ then à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ format. Ah Q in Modern China

Chinese national character has long been tied up with the issue of â€Å"face,† and how best to â€Å"save† it.   The idea that what is important in any situation is not so much the actual outcome, but the way the situation looks to outsiders.This concept has been an enduring one from the feudalist imperial system that ruled China for two thousand years throughout its turbulent 20th century history of civil war and communism.It is a contributing factor to most of the major political and historical events that have taken place there, such as the Cultural Revolution, the annexations of Tibet and Xinjiang, the attitude towards Taiwan, the Tian’anmen Square Protests, and even the economy that grows at an average of 10% per year for over fifteen years.It is also well represented in China’s literature and cultural life.   Many authors from the late Qing Dynasty onward have tried to define a Chinese national character through their works.   One of the most successful of these was Lu Xun.Born in Zhejiang province and educated in Japan, Lu Xun dedicated his works, both fiction and non-fiction, to the goal of defining Chinese qualities and healing the spiritual and moral needs of the Chinese people.   His most famous story was The True Story of Ah Q, published in a newspaper beginning in late 1921.It features a village loser who does nothing notable and is looked down upon by all who encounter him.   This story, however, has become ingrained in the Chinese culture and scholars such as Lee Ou-fan maintain that it holds influence even today.One of the major ways the story portrays saving face is in the way Ah Q relates to his defeats.   When he does something wrong, such as insulting someone for no good reason by not holding his tongue, he gets beaten up, but he then justifies it by claiming it to be an outrage that people like his â€Å"sons† could beat him up.His psychological victory is enough for him to justify anything, n o matter how pathetic it seems to the other villagers.   When he loses his gambling money in a mob, he justifies it by slapping himself so that he’ll have something to feel victorious over (Lu).This relates to Chinese mentality in general, from government actions to individuals.   The way China deals with any situation is to put a good face on it or to cover it up.   Passing an anti-secession law, such as the one the Party Congress enacted in 2005 for the show effect it would have on Taiwan, is only one in a long line of examples.Refusing to re-evaluate their currency in relation to the dollar, the lack of acknowledgement about SARS and AIDS, the blocking or censoring of websites such as google, wikipedia, and the BBC, the banning and rehabilitation of filmmakers such as Zhang Yimou and now Jia Zhangke-each contributes to the argument that Chinese character has not changed since Ah Q’s time.Another enduring aspect of Chinese mentality skillfully depicted here is that of the mob.   We see mobs in everyday village life, such as the gambling mob that steals Ah Q’s money, and also when he teases the nun.   While most people are at least respectful of religious individuals, no one in the crowd does anything but laugh as Ah Q disgraces the nun in order to get attention.He touches her bare skin and insinuates that she sleeps with a monk, both of which are extremely insulting, but no one does anything but laugh (Lu).   This kind of onlooker crowds can be found anywhere in China when there is a fight or traffic accident.   They reached the peak of their violence during the Cultural Revolution, in which many people were denounced before just such mobs of jeering onlookers.Mobs also come into the story near its end, when the sweep of history enters the quiet village in the form of the Xinhai Revolution of 1911.   Here the mobs try and loot the homes of anyone who is not â€Å"revolutionary,† meaning those of the wealthy.In the end, Ah Q is caught and executed as a scapegoat for the looting.   The end of this character is as unspectacular as the rest of his life had been.Through telling the story of this kind of small man, Lu is expressing his concern that the â€Å"average† Chinese person is becoming too much like Ah Q, and will be too afraid to participate when the real revolution comes around.That real revolution is still around the corner, and it remains to be seen if the growing Chinese middle class will ever be so discontent as to make a real change to their totalitarian government.The people today still need to take Lu’s message to heart and realize that the actions of their government are viewed by the outside world the way a reader views Ah Q, as idiotic praising of past and hoping for future while neglecting the present by worrying more about â€Å"saving face† than any concrete action.Beijing can move all the Han people it wants into Tibet and Xinjiang, but it will never e radicate or assimilate these two different ethnicities completely, and will only require more â€Å"saving face† in the future when the never-ending sectarian violence escalates.Lu was very observant in pointing out these weaknesses in Chinese character, and the PRC
